Hiring A Moving Company
If you plan on hiring a moving company, you might want to do some research first. Please review the sites below for more great information about moving and to find a company who's services fits you best. What do I look for when hiring a moving company?
The American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA) offers a Certified Mover Program for moving companies throughout the United States. This program consists of professional movers that have agreed to follow “Code of Conduct,” by responding to customers both ethically and in a timely manner.

  • Storage of household goods
  • Professional service
  • Prompt customer service when dealing with complaints
  • Arbitration

Moving Yourself
Some home buyers choose to move themselves and their belongings. It you want to save time and money by taking on this endeavor yourself, be sure that you have ample packing supplies. Please review the sites below for some informative resources about purchasing boxes, bubble wrap, labels and tape. One Month Prior to your Move:
  • Make Travel Arrangements
    • Airline, Bus, Rental Car
  • Set up Moving Company
  • Make Temporary Housing Arrangements
  • Contact Doctors/Dentist to transfer your records
    • Get Referrals for New Area
  • Arrange Pets to be Transported
  • Ask Hometown Realty Consultant for Assistance
Two Weeks Before your Move:
  • Put in a forwarding address (mail, Magazines, etc.)
  • Change your Email address if necessary
  • Change your utilities and give forwarding address
  • Confirm Travel Reservations
  • Make plans for Pets being moved
  • Close Out Bank Accounts and Transfer Funds
  • Keep Important Documents in Safe place
Day of Moving:
  • Do a Final Walk-Through of the House - Make sure all closets, basement, attic and garage are checked.
  • Keep all valuable personal items and important documents with you during travel
  • Have Travelers Checks on Hand
  • Keep your Hometown Agent's number close by for any last minute concerns or questions.
